Summer Skin: My Updated Morning Routine

Be honest: are you still wearing sunscreen when you WFH? I came across this article from Vogue this morning, and it inspired me to share my summer AM skincare routine which, of course, includes SPF. My friend and fellow University of Miami alum, Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Laura Scott, reminds us that even if you’re not outdoors or near a window, the blue light emitted from our computer screens (and even our phones!) can cause skin damage.

“Windows only protect us from UVB rays, which are the burning rays of the sun, but not UVA, the aging rays. Visible light, particularly blue light, is a big player in hyperpigmentation like melasma and dark spots, so protecting our skin is still just as important as ever.”

During the hot and humid summer months, when I’m typically wearing less makeup, I like to edit down my routine and really focus on lightweight hydration in addition to sun protection. Here’s what my product line up currently looks like.

Brighten

Despite the high price tag, there’s a reason this vitamin C serum has a cult following. A combination of ferulic acid and pure vitamin C and E, Skinceuticals CE Ferulic serum protects against environmental damage caused by free radicals like UVA/UVB rays and ozone pollution. It reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation and dark spots, while also targeting loss of firmness, fine lines and wrinkles. CE Ferulic is ideal for dry to normal, or combination skin types. I alternate between this and Phloretin CF if my skin is feeling oily/congested.

Hydrate

Instant Brightening Moisturizer is the newest addition to Caudalie’s vinoperfect range, powered by the brand’s propriety blend of viniferine (grapevine sap extract) which diminishes dark spots and adds radiance to the skin. What I love most about this product is that it gives an instant hydrated glow to the skin without being overly greasy – your skin just drinks it right up, making it the perfect moisturizer to layer under SPF.

I’ve never met an eye cream that I loved as much as this one. The rich and silky texture of the cream applies like a dream on the delicate eye area, and almost instantly de-puffs tired morning eyes. I’ve noticed a marked difference in my under-eye circles since I started using it regularly three months ago. The secret? 1o percent pure vitamin C and hyaluronic acid work together to hydrate and brighten tired-looking eyes.

Protect

There’s a reason this relatively new sunscreen has a near cult following: it’s SO good! Many people are turned off by sunscreen because it can leave a white cast on their skin – not the case here. The Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen is just as its name states, undetectable. The smooth gel texture glides right onto the skin and, like magic, also blurs nearly every pore on your face. It doubles as a makeup primer, too, creating a flawless base with the added bonus of SPF 40.
